My work as a lecturer
Upon my retirement (in 2013) I did not want to withdraw completely and accepted a teaching appointment at the Beuth University of Applied Sciences for Technology in Berlin-Wedding (the Beuth University was renamed at the start of the winter semester 2021 to Berliner University of Applied Sciences - BHT). Initially I taught courses in water protection, from 2016 in the module Waste management (waste, wastewater), with the wastewater portion assigned to me.
For two years — until the cessation of face-to-face teaching due to the coronavirus epidemic — I was also active as a lecturer at the German University in Cairo (GUC), Campus Berlin. These courses titled Wastewater Treatment were delivered in English.
Course "Water protection"
I last taught the courses in the "Water protection" module in the winter semester 2016/17 in the Bachelor programme "Environmental Engineers Civil Engineering" at the institution then called Beuth University.
There were two different types of courses: lectures – conducted in the sense of the university as seminar-style instruction (sU) – and exercises (Ü). Both scripts are available on the right under Downloads in *.pdf format.
Course "Waste management (waste, wastewater)"
From the winter semester 2016/17 until 2023/24 I then taught an exercise in wastewater as part of the module "Waste management (waste/wastewater)" as an elective in the Master's programme "Urban Infrastructure Planning (Transport and Water)" at the Berliner University of Applied Sciences.
The waste portion was covered by a colleague; my part comprised the courses in the wastewater section. Only 16 lecture units of 45 minutes each were available timewise. Therefore the course content had to be limited to wastewater treatment. In the first part, using the example of the Stahnsdorf sewage treatment plant of the Berliner Wasserbetriebe, the design was practiced based on worksheet DWA-A 131 (Download Excel file); in the second part a simple simulation model for the same sewage treatment plant was created using the software package STOAT (Download STOAT files).
Course "Wastewater Treatment"
This course for Bachelor students at the German University in Cairo (GUC), Berlin campus, was held for the last time in the winter term 2018/19 because of Corona (in English, link to download the script). Its content was essentially based on the course "Abwasserbehandlung" at the BHT. A fixed component of the course was a visit to the Stahnsdorf sewage treatment plant at the start of the semester.
